April 14th marked 20 years since my man and I flew to Las Vegas and got married at 1:00 in the morning. I can not believe how quickly time has flown by and how much our life has changed in the last 20 years.
When I used to hear people say "Marriage takes hard work" I'd get irritated. Why should it take work when you are in love? Oh how naive I was. :)
I get it now! Of course in the beginning its easy. You are drunk in love and can't see anything that could possibly take work. Add kids, careers, animals, illness, etc and now you have your work cut out for you. Its easy to get lost in being busy and putting your relationship last on the list. I had my kids all under 4 years and I can tell you, my relationship was last for a period of time. Then we saw several of our closest friends split up and it scared the hell out of me. I saw how that could happen if I didn't put in the work. Yep, now I'm the one saying "Marriage takes hard work!"
Like most couples, my husband and I are busy. With two businesses, 3 kids and a house full of animals, its hard to take time for the two of us. Our weekends are full of games, competitions, parties, you name it. This doesn't leave much time for us. Don't get me wrong. We love this time of our lives and embrace every bit of it. However, we also know its important for us to stay connected. This is why we take the time to get away.
Wether its a night, weekend, week, or even just an hour date to Costco, we make it happen. These times alone I am reminded of what an incredible man I'm married to. Its hard to balance life at every stage but we try. Life moves so quickly and I am hoping to live out the rest of it with him. :)
