Triggers. We all have them and most of us don't know when it will hit. This last week has been a trigger for many of the women I know, members, friends and family. No matter what side of the fence you are on politically, listening to a woman describe a sexual assault in detail is heart breaking. Considering 1 in 5 women in the United States has been sexually assaulted, (That's just the reported ones) I would bet we all know at least one, if not several who have gone thru this.
We know that no matter how long ago it was, there are certain things we can't forget. Whether it be a sound, a smell or a feeling, it is ingrained into our memory. There are things I don't remember and things I remember like it was yesterday and I will never forget.
We also know that most women don't report it out of fear they won't be believed or out of shame that they somehow are at fault. I didn't and never told anyone until years later. Of course now I wish I could go back and change that but I can't. All I can do is help educate women to talk and to take back control and hold their attacker accountable.
That being said, I have no idea what the truth is in the news right now. That is not what this is about. This is about the feelings that have come up. To all of the women that walk thru our doors, know that we stand with you and we are here to support each other when those triggers happen. I have seen it multiple times in my classes alone and I am proud to be a safe place for women to feel comfortable and supported.
Women unite and we can change the world.
Much love Divas.
